The MASS first event was held in a meeting room surrounded by the windows in SONICJAM.  The room never looks closed because everyone can see the inside. Then, Blue plants drawn with masking tape sprout, and had grew up over 4days. Just like natural plants, the art masking plants matured while transforming into various shapes as if reaching to the air. Around the plants, colorful birds made by the employees fly joyfully.

YUSUKE ASAI “The reason why I chose the bule is that I thought it suits the space. SONICJAM has a liberal atmosphere to develop ideas, so I worked on it for freely,  taking care not to fill the blank spaces for creativity.  I aimed for this art work make visitors wonder  how much far these plants would expand where they would go.”

“I had 3 times workshops, and let employees make birds made from masking tape. Birds appear in the plants when they grow a certain amount live in the branches, and carry the seeds. As the birds made by everyone fly around the room, the art work itself gains the ability to fly out into the world. As more and more birds are born,  I want to see them fly out at the office, or even to the station.”

In November, two months after the first session, the trees began to turn red, and Yusuke Asai came to visit SONICJAM again. This time, he started drawing on the white wall of the lounge space on the first floor.
The white wall was covered in a motif, and in the end a large mud mural was finished. The mural was painted using soil from around the world, as well as that which Sonicjam employees had supplied.  Yusuke Asai also took the masking tapes off the wall which is done in vol.1 and reused in different shapes, and it gained new life.

Yusuke Asai“It must a lot of energy are releasing while , someone is making stuff. So its challenging for me work in this company. it matter of how long dose this keep after I gone.  I think Artists are like duckweed. This job is like a typhoon. We need to catch lots of information in a moment or think it deep, and the release it as like the maximum instantaneous wind velocity. I guess its new experience for Sonicjam employee to be with that kinds of people.”

“It is way much different to draw on the panel and to draw on the wall which is never brought out. Drawing on the wall is special experience because I can communicate a passion to make things at the place and at the moment.”
“However, I will delete this work as usual, because if I keep the great works for a long time, I will never reach out, creators feel it often though. If the out put is gone, and then I forced myself to make better one again. The latest things are not exceed on the previous, my evaluation is also getting down. Thus, it’s not negative to delete the art work because its a chance to start something new.”

The new relation between office
and contemporary art

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

MASS is an unique art project which invites artists with good technique to perform in-house for companies.
Within the MASS project, it is aimed at teaching coworkers new values, and enhancing their communication by exposing them to the thought processes of the various artists invited. This project is not intended for producing commercial art works, but rather, finding out the value of the activity of making art, and helping the process to be more common to the daily life.
At the sametime, we try to make the office gain a new faction - a place for workers get new inspirations and values.

BACKGROUND

This program is established for coworkers as an opportunity to gain new insight of the creative process in the office. In most cases, employees tend to rely on inspirational media, all collected from the computer screen. Since they are used to sitting in front of the desk for long time while they are working, this is the only inspirational outlet available, especially during the busy seasons. As such, these employees suggested alternative paths for inspiration should be held in-house. From that thought, this program was conceived.

“What form makes it possible to know the artist’s attitude toward the artworks and sharing the time for making art together ?” Within the MASS project, We think the contemporary art as a communication tool and then, the unique perception by art enhance the in-house daily activity and help coworkers gain new inspiration. The art project aimed not only for viewing and exhibiting, but rather, exposing people to Artists’ live performance in- house, enhance the activity in office.

“Performance and Exhibition in house”

Coworkers profoundly understand the artwork and the concept by experience with being exposed by the thought processes of the artists invited.

”Participation by coworkers”

This project requires coworkers to not only ask artists to make something for inspiration, but  also will allow them to directly join in the artistic processes in a variety of ways, such as attending workshops. In that process of grooving the arts, members and office space, works get motived to create their daily output.

”Opportunity for inspiration”

By exposing coworkers be close to the art and offering them a opportunity for gaining better idea and inspiration, We aim to make the office gain a new fanction - a place for workers get new inspirations.

“Improving the literacy in arts”

Artists invited and coworkers teach the different skills each other as creators. MASS help people not only to view the artwork itself, but to be active as that they can talk “the words from the artwork”
